Ethics in Therapy

Did you know all mental health providers need to follow an ethics code? These codes are in place so that our clients are cared for in an ethically responsible way. They guide things like our relationships with clients, our treatment decisions, client privacy, policies and procedures, and many other areas of our therapeutic practice.

How does this ethics code protect our clients? Well, in order to do our jobs effectively we must follow certain rules. Do you know why you can’t be friends with your therapist, or even date them? It’s because it would impair our objectivity and the work we do with you. There should not be any relationship/interactions with your therapist outside of the therapeutic space. For similar reasons, your therapist shouldn’t really know anyone in your family/friend circle and if they do, it should be discussed upon the realization.

These codes also guide your privacy. Many therapists receive supervision, but unless a specific release has been signed by the client, the therapist cannot disclose any information that would lead to the client’s identification. The same goes for any other providers collaborating or inquiring about the client. Unless you sign a release, what is discussed in therapy stays between you and your therapist.

There is so much more ethically that mental health professionals have to follow, so here are some links to the ethics codes:
