Back to School Scaries
Back to school is a challenging time for everyone. Many children struggle with anxiety over a new year, new classroom, and new teachers while also being excited to be back in the classroom with their friends (or maybe even learning). Parents may also experience some anxiety about how to help guide their children through the transition from summer to school.
Some things parents can remember are talking to your children openly about what to expect, identifying safe people to talk to in the school, as well as coping skills they can use in the classroom. It would be beneficial to establish your new routines, especially mealtimes and bedtimes, maybe even starting a few days prior to the new school year. I recommend chatting with your child about self-care, and things they can do outside of the classroom that bring them joy as well (i.e., sports, crafts, clubs, etc.). It may also be helpful to talk to your child about bullying, ensure they have strategies to help, and know the warning signs for themselves as well as others in their school.
Kiddos, it is important to remember that although this is scary, it is also an opportunity to make new friends, have new experiences, and learn a whole lot. Take everything day by day, or even moment by moment. You don’t have to accomplish it all at once. If something is challenging at school, talk with your teachers about it or practice advocating for yourself with your parents. Remember, you’re not alone. Chances are many of your peers are feeling the same way you are about the new year.

Remember, back to school is a crazy time for everyone. Take it day by day, and if that’s too stressful, moment by moment. You’ve got this!
